How to Master LGCSE Exams

By Takatso Kumi, LDTC

LGCSE stands for Lesotho General Certificate of Secondary Education, which is a qualification taken by students at the end of secondary education in Lesotho. It is equivalent to the IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education), which is a popular international qualification for 14 to 16 year olds. LGCSE exams cover a wide range of subjects and skills, and are recognized by leading universities and employers worldwide. If you are preparing for your LGCSE exams, here are some tips on how to master them.

Choose your subjects wisely

LGCSE offers a flexible curriculum, with a choice of over 70 subjects in any combination. You can choose subjects that suit your interests, abilities and career goals. However, you should also consider the availability of resources, teachers and exam centers for your chosen subjects. Some subjects may have more demand than others, so you should register early to secure your place. You can find the list of available subjects and their syllabuses on the Examinations Council of Lesotho website.

Plan your study schedule

LGCSE exams are usually held in October/November or May/June each year. You should plan your study schedule well in advance, taking into account the exam dates, deadlines and requirements for each subject. You should also allocate enough time for revision, practice and self-assessment. A good study schedule should:

  • Be realistic and flexible
  • Include short and long-term goals
  • Balance study time with rest and leisure
  • Vary the study methods and techniques
  • Review the progress and adjust accordingly

Use reliable and updated resources

LGCSE exams are based on the syllabuses and standards set by Cambridge International, which aligns with the GCSE qualification taken in England. You should use reliable and updated resources that match the syllabus and assessment objectives for each subject. Some of the resources you can use are:

  • Textbooks and reference books
  • Past papers and mark schemes
  • Revision guides and notes
  • Experiment videos and simulations
  • Online platforms and websites

You can find some of these resources on the IG Exams website, which offers topic questions, past papers, revision notes and experiment videos for various IGCSE subjects.

Practice your skills and knowledge

LGCSE exams assess your skills and knowledge in different ways, such as written, oral, coursework and practical assessment. You should practice your skills and knowledge regularly, using different types of questions and tasks. You should also check your answers against the mark schemes or model answers, and identify your strengths and weaknesses. Some of the skills and knowledge you should practice are:

  • Recall and application of facts, concepts and principles
  • Analysis and evaluation of information, arguments and evidence
  • Communication and presentation of ideas, opinions and solutions
  • Problem-solving and decision-making
  • Experimentation and investigation

Seek feedback and guidance

LGCSE exams are not only a test of your individual performance, but also an opportunity to learn from others. You should seek feedback and guidance from your teachers, peers and mentors, who can help you improve your understanding, skills and confidence. You should also participate in group discussions, study sessions and mock exams, where you can exchange ideas, share experiences and support each other. Some of the feedback and guidance you should seek are:

  • Clarification of doubts and queries
  • Explanation of concepts and methods
  • Correction of errors and mistakes
  • Suggestion of improvement areas and strategies
  • Encouragement and motivation

Stay healthy and positive

LGCSE exams can be stressful and challenging, but they can also be rewarding and enjoyable. You should stay healthy and positive throughout your preparation and exam period, by taking care of your physical, mental and emotional well-being. You should also celebrate your achievements, no matter how big or small they are. Some of the ways you can stay healthy and positive are:

  • Eat well-balanced meals
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Sleep enough hours
  • Exercise regularly
  • Relax your mind
  • Manage your emotions
  • Seek help when needed
  • Believe in yourself

LGCSE exams are not the end of your learning journey, but a stepping stone to your future success. By following these tips, you can master your LGCSE exams with confidence and excellence. Good luck!👍
